New Study Says Live Theatre Is As Good As Exercise
Exercise. That word strikes fear into many people and all doughnuts. As a matter of fact, research has shown that only 45.6% of people in Cedar Rapids works out on a regular basis. That means that more than half of us (yes...US) sit on our keisters and eat apple cider cake while YouTubing other people exercising. Don't judge me.
Anyways....Fret not, work-out weenies, there is something you can do that is almost as good as hitting the gym. Live theatre!
A recent study in Great Britain suggests that going to see live theatre (musicals, more specifically) is just as good as a 30-minute workout. An article in British newspaper, The Sun, scientists monitors audience members at a "Dreamgirls" show in London's West End, and got some surprising results.
Heart rates doubled as the drama and songs intensified, peaking before the interval and finale.
In all, heart rates of the 12 seated volunteers were raised to between 50 and 70 per cent of their theoretical maximum for 28 minutes.
The British Heart Foundation says these levels are “optimal” for stimulating cardio fitness and boosting stamina.
Dr Joseph Devlin, of University College London, said such activity was equal “to an exerting cardio workout”.
The best part about this is that there is SO much live theatre here in the Corridor, you can conceivably see three new shows a week, thereby sitting your way to immortality! Check out the Corridor Theatre Community on their Facebook Group and prepare yourself to get swole!
