Iowa Meatpacking Plant Stabbing Leaves One Man Dead
Authorities in central Iowa have made an arrest after an early-morning stabbing Tuesday at a meatpacking plant in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
According to Iowa's News Now, the Wright County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a stabbing at Prestage Foods, south of Eagle Grove, at approximately 5:42 a.m. on Tuesday morning, February 16. When sheriff's deputies arrived, they found 50-year-old Wayne Smith of Fort Dodge dead inside the "employee locker room area" of the plant.
26-year-old Lukouxs Brown, also of Fort Dodge, has been arrested in the case. Brown is being held in the Wright County Jail after being charged with First-Degree Murder in the case. His initial court appearance is scheduled for today.
Iowa's News Now reports the two men knew each other, though the Iowa Department of Public Safety says "the exact nature of their relationship is under investigation." According to the Prestage Foods website, the Eagle Grove pork processing plant employs more than 900.
This is the second time in the last two weeks Eagle Grove has been in the news, for very different reasons. Last week, I shared the story of Heather Kimbrough of Eagle Grove. In just over a month, she'll be undergoing surgery to have one of her kidneys removed and donated to a 22-month-old boy she's never met. The toddler has no kidney function and is on dialysis for 12 hours each day. You can read the full story HERE.
