Two central Iowa police officers were among those killed in a head-on crash.

Officers from the Des Moines Police Department were transporting a prisoner from Council Bluffs to Des Moines when they were hit by a vehicle traveling westbound on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80. The accident happened at around 12:40 Saturday morning near mile marker 117 outside Waukee, about 20 minutes from Des Moines.

KCCI reports the officers, the prisoner in the police cruiser, and the driver of the other vehicle were all killed in the fiery crash. None of the names of those involved have been released, though the Des Moines Police Department says both officers had graduated from the police academy last fall. It's the first time since 2007 a member of the Des Moines Police Department has been killed in a crash.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those involved as well as the Des Moines Police Department.
