One of the more dangerous intersections in the city of Cedar Rapids is about to get some safety improvements. The city says it will install traffic signals at the intersection of Mt Vernon Road and 40th Street SE near the entrance to the Mt Vernon Road Hy-Vee store.

A portion of Mt Vernon Road from 38th Street to East Post Road will also be resurfaced with new sidewalks and water main and sewer improvements as well. The total cost of the project will be nearly $2 million, most of which will come from the city's Paving for Progress fund. The city of Cedar Rapids will also be getting a $500,000 grant for the new traffic signal since the Iowa DOT determined that the intersection was so dangerous.

According to statistics, there have been 22 crashes at or near the Hy-Vee entrance since 2015. Construction is set to begin in April with completion of the project sometime in September.
