Pedestrian Hit By Cedar Rapids Dump Truck Driver Has Died

A Cedar Rapids dump truck driver will have charges against him elevated following the death of a pedestrian he hit two weeks ago.

71-year-old Jerry Bemer of Cedar Rapids was driving his dump truck in downtown Des Moines on the morning of Wednesday, January 22 when he hit 50-year-old Michael Monkmeier of Mitchellville, Iowa. WHO says Monkmeier was in a crosswalk between 8th Street and Grand Avenue at around 11:30 a.m. that morning. Snow was falling at the time.

The Des Moines Police Department confirmed this morning that Monkmeier has died. KCCI reports the department says charges against Bemer will be upgraded. Bemer was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk following the accident.
