I'm going to be totally honest with you. Until I moved to Iowa almost six years ago (where has the time gone?!), I knew next to nothing about the state. Even growing up in Michigan, another Midwest state, didn't prepare me to move here. For the longest time, I thought Des Moines was pronounced "Dess Moin-ez." It's sad, but it's true.

Despite my previous lack of knowledge, I feel like I've been here long enough now to call myself an Iowan. I've spent a lot of time back in Michigan explaining to my friends and family that we aren't the potato state and that I don't live in the middle of a farm field. I've caucused, I've been to Adventureland, I've enjoyed many county fairs, I've endured a negative 50-degree wind chill... I've even been to the Sweet Corn Festival! I'm proud to live here and I'll defend Iowa forever.

When you're from a smaller state, people typically don't know a whole lot about it. That usually means that people are going to say some ridiculous things. Heck, people in Iowa STILL ask me if I've ever been to 8-Mile and if the UP is part of Canada, and Michigan is much larger! That leads me to this new video from a native Iowan by the name of Derrick VanDerMillen.

According to his Facebook page, Derrick is from Marion and studied at the University of Iowa before moving to Los Angeles. As you can imagine, there are a lot of people in LA who know absolutely nothing about Iowa, which has made for some interesting conversations. Derrick reenacted some of those conversations in a new YouTube video titled When I Say 'I'm From Iowa' in Los Angeles. The caption reads:

"After years of living in Los Angeles, I've finally collected all the strange things people say about my home state. I'm sure anyone coming from a lesser-known portion of the world can relate!"

The six-minute video gave me a good laugh, and I'm sure you'll like it, too! Just so you're aware, there is some swearing in the video. You can watch it below:
