A sergeant with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections is dead after she was shot and killed after a traffic accident in Milwaukee.

46-year-old Tracey Smith was giving her 17-year-old son a driving lesson Friday, August 30, at approximately 5:15 p.m. when her son was involved in what the Milwaukee Police Department called "a minor accident."

According to a criminal complaint obtained by WISN, Smith and her son were waiting to make a left turn when the other vehicle cut into their lane, striking their vehicle on the passenger side. Tracey Smith reportedly got out of her vehicle and spoke to the other driver, who threatened to kill her. Witnesses report he then shot her in the chest. He then did a U-Turn and drove away. Smith's son drove her to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she died. TMJ4 says the autopsy showed the bullet perforated Smith's left lung and heart.

Ollie Luckett, Tracey Smith's father told WISN

You know how it is on these streets. You probably ride it. You know how these people are acting. It's ridiculous. My daughter shouldn't have lost her life like that.

She was a beautiful person. She knew how to treat people. She knew how to talk to people. She was wonderful. That was my oldest daughter. And I wish you knew how I feel.

The driver of the other vehicle has been identified as 35-year-old Matthew Wilks. He's been charged with First Degree Intentional Homicide and Firearm by a Felon. He faces a maximum sentence of life in person as well as up to $25,000 in fines.
