A former Cedar Rapids man was arrested by federal marshals in Davenport on Tuesday. He's been charged with two murders that happened in Cedar Rapids early this year, less than 18 hours apart.

According to KCRG, 20-year-old Kazius Jare Childress was arrested by U.S. marshals in Davenport Tuesday afternoon. The U.S. Marshal fugitive task force identified Childress as he exited a vehicle in Davenport and marshals were able to arrest him without incident.

Criminal complaints show Childress has been charged with the murder of Cordal Lewis on January 27, 2022, in the 300 block of 31st St. Dr. SE. He's also been charged with murder in the January 28, 2022 killing of Kavon Johnson in the 2200 block of Blakely Blvd S.E. Lewis' body was found in a city street while Johnson's was discovered in the parking lot of a Cedar Rapids park. Lewis was 19 at the time of his death, while Johnson was 22.

The criminal complaint in Lewis' death states that video surveillance from a home on 31st St. Dr. SE "showed Lewis running away from the defendant as the defendant shot at him several times."

In the other criminal complaint against Childress for Johnson's death, it's stated that surveillance video showed the two men had been in a vehicle together at the Kum and Go at 1420 Mount Vernon Road SE. That video was just before "another video and audio clip that captured a vehicle matching the same description entering Cedar Valley Park and multiple gunshots being fired. The defendant admitted being present at the scene when Johnson was shot.  The defendant was recently identified as the individual who shot and killed Johnson."

Childress has been charged with First-Degree Murder in both crimes. He also faces two counts of Going Armed with Intent.
