Brandon Carpenter is one of the farm managers for CJ Farms. Their operation raises over 1,500 cattle and about 3,000 acres of crops.

We got about 1,500 head and they're in a cattle building confinement and they have a pit that’s about 14 feet so we only have to pump once a year. We usually get them from Kentucky through an outfit and they bring them here and keep them here for roughly 200 days or so and then send them out to Tama or Joslin.

Carpenter adds they also ship to other places depending on prices.

The farm has been in the Carpenter family since Brandon’s grandparents bought the place. Over the years it was taken over by Brandon’s dad and when he finished college Brandon also joined the operation.

I went to Hawkeye Tech in the Waterloo area. I did networking; which didn't really help anyway on the farm- it’s just computers. And then I went and got my CDL while I was there. Came back after I got my CDL because we needed more help on the farm.

CJ Farm hosted the Northeast Iowa Beefmeet earlier in June where local cattle producers all gathered for a meal, discussed local, state, and national issues affecting the industry, and took part in a farm tour. Their producers were able to see the confinement barn and ask Brandon and his family questions about how the farm is operated.
