[UPDATED] Cedar Rapids Police Identify Female Juvenile Found Dead In Vehicle
[UPDATE July 21 1:35 pm] The Cedar Rapids Police Department has released the name of a 15-year-old female who died in Cedar Rapids Tuesday morning. She's been identified as Tyliyah L. Whitis of Peoria, Illinois. The vehicle she was in was registered to a member of her family. Cedar Rapids Police say that, though Whitis was shot at least one time, an official cause of death has not yet been determined by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.
[ORIGINAL STORY] Cedar Rapids Police are investigating what they believe is a shooting of a 15-year-old female in Cedar Rapids.
According to a media release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, officers responded to a call of a one-vehicle accident just before 6:20 Tuesday morning at the Hawthorne Hills Apartment Complex. It's located in the 2200 block of C. Street SW in Cedar Rapids.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a badly damaged vehicle with a 15-year-old female in the driver's seat. She was deceased. Cedar Rapids Police say she "had what appeared to be gunshot wound(s). An autopsy is being performed by Iowa's State Medical Examiner's Office. The teen's identity has not been released, pending notification of relatives.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department says they believe the shooting was a targeted incident based on their investigation thus far. The investigation continues at this time.
