Pedestrian Killed on I-80 in Iowa City; Victims Identified in Fairfax Train/Car Collision

Two accidents just over 24 hours apart have claimed three lives in eastern Iowa.

Monday afternoon, September 27, at approximately 4:16 p.m., a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on the eastbound side of Interstate 80 underneath the Highway 1/North Dodge Street overpass. The incident happened near mile marker 246, according to an accident report from the Iowa State Patrol. *The photo above from our news partner, CBS 2 Iowa's News Now, shows emergency responders at the scene.

The pedestrian has not been identified, pending notification of relatives.

Sunday afternoon, September 26, at about 4:15 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a vehicle/train accident near Fairfax.

A media release from the Linn County Sheriff's Office says a vehicle was traveling south from a private railroad crossing when it was hit by an eastbound Union Pacific train. 42-year-old Jason Williams and 44-year-old Amber Wisted, both of Cedar Rapids, were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to KWWL, at least nine people have been killed in the state of Iowa this year in accidents involving trains. Last year, the Federal Railroad Administration reported 757 people died in train incidents. That was the lowest number of fatalities since 2015.
