Unpopular Opinion: Iowa Loose Meat Sandwiches are Overrated
I fully expect and probably really deserve to get flamed over this, but I need to express an unpopular opinion. I have a deep conviction that Iowa loose meat sandwiches are overrated. There, I said it.
Since I grew up here in the Midwest, my family often went to establishments where you could get what is referred to as a maid rite or loose meat sandwich. I prefer calling it the latter since maid rite is also a brand and this is nothing personal against them.
I also need to be clear that I am not a vegetarian and am not coming at this from that angle. No offense intended to you if you are, but cows fear me because of my love of burgers.
What's my problem with loose meat sandwiches? Here's the thing. I ate plenty growing up because my dad loved them. I'll sum it up in one sentence:
It's scientifically impossible to eat a loose meat sandwich and not be wearing meat or having the floor covered with it by the time you're done.
Whew. I have feared saying that for years, but it's true. Yes, they taste great and I'm aware that we in Iowa get credit for this miraculous sandwich invention. BUT, every time I hear someone understandably rave about how great they are, I think of a mess.
If I'm being honest with myself, it's probably all my fault. Maybe I should have more agility and handle them better. However, it's my conviction that you shouldn't have to possess mad mashing skills to get the bun to contain the meat without it projecting everywhere.
Is my opinion unpopular? You betcha. I can barely walk the Iowa streets safely with this belief I have. Now that it's out in the open, flame away. I probably have it coming.
