According to the site, the Des Moines Register has recognized 130 workplaces for 2021, and those places were chosen based on employee feedback. The methodology page on Top Workplaces reads:

"Participants of the regional and national awards programs must survey their employees using the Energage Workplace Survey. The research-backed employee engagement survey consists of 24 base statements that capture anonymous responses in four culture imperatives: [Align, Connect, Coach, and Performance]"

In addition, companies also have to hit a minimum required response rate from their employees to be considered, and questionable results are ruled out. You can read more on the process HERE.
