Jaymz Remembers ‘The Basement Broadcast’ With his Dad
The World Series begins Tuesday night between the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs. The last time the Indians won a World Series was in 1948, and of course we all know that the Cubs haven't won since 1908. All that being said, this should be an exciting series! I've always been a huge baseball fan. I grew up in Minnesota, so we cheered for the Twins.
I remember watching the games with my father. We would set up a tape recorder and call the game as if we were the announcers. We must have called over a hundred games...I wish I hadn't lost the cassette tapes! In 1987 the Twins won the World Series. I remember it like it was yesterday. My Dad and I watched every game together. Our "play by play" commentary was at it's best, and we even had a pre-game show.
Nobody ever heard our broadcast, but we didn't care. We were having fun, and it's a memory I'll always have. As I got older, we retired the "basement broadcast team." We had a good run, but it was time to move on. The Twins won it all again in 1991. We had no broadcast, but we were able to watch every game together. That meant a lot to me. If the Twins ever make it back to the World Series, perhaps my Dad and I can get the team back together....at least for one game. I would like that.
