Ottumwa Cops Cleared in Deadly Shooting
Ottumwa Police Officers were cleared in the shooting of an armed suspect who fired upon cops following an attempted armed robbery on Friday August 3rd in the small town community about 100 miles south of Cedar Rapids.
According to CBS2 News, Wapello County Attorney Gary Oldenburger said in a news release Saturday that the officers' actions were "absolutely necessary to eliminate the threat the subjects posed to them, their fellow officers, students and staff in the school, and residents in the surrounding neighborhood."
The shooting took place on Friday August 3 when Ottumwa cops received a call at 1:44 p.m. and were told three people, one with an assault rifle, were spotted running away from an area toward the direction of Liberty Elementary School.
It was reported that one of the suspects was armed with an assault rifle, who then opened fire at police. Police engaged the suspects, killing one person and seriously injuring another. Other suspects were captured and taken into custody.
