Man Part of Officer-Involved Shooting in Cedar Rapids Has Been Identified
A Cedar Rapids man has been identified as the person who was part of an officer-involved shooting in Cedar Rapids over the weekend.
According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety (IDPS), officers with the Cedar Rapids Police Department executed a traffic stop just before 4 a.m. Saturday morning, July 30. The vehicle was stopped in the 2200 block of Glass Road NE due to erratic driving.
The IDPS says the driver of the vehicle brandished a gun and shots were exchanged between the man and a pair of Cedar Rapids police officers. The driver was hit by the gunfire but neither officer was injured.
The injured driver has now been identified as 23-year-old Brandon L. Nelson of Cedar Rapids. Just before noon on Monday, Nelson was still being treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. However, the Iowa Department of Public Safety says his discharge is pending.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating Saturday morning's incident. They are conducting interviews with the officers involved. Once complete, the officers' names will be released.
