Tis the season. The longer days and warmer temperatures that are coming this weekend, I promise, mean construction season is definitely upon us.

Earlier this week, a pedestrian bridge was taken down over 1st Avenue in Cedar Rapids. Now, a bridge that handles both vehicle and pedestrian traffic is getting ready for major construction. The impacts felt on this one will be large.

The City of Cedar Rapids announced via a press release Thursday afternoon that the 32nd Street NE bridge over Interstate 380 "will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the construction season." The work, a joint project of the city and the Iowa Department of Transportation, will begin on Monday, April 5.

According to the release, the work will include improvements to both the bridge and roadway nearby. The on and off ramps will have paving redone, the bridge deck itself will be rehabilitated, new traffic signals will be installed at both ends of the bridge, new bridge railings will be put in place, and sidewalk ramps will be improved for ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance.

Even though the bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic until deep into the year, access will remain open for pedestrians. Construction will begin on the east side on-ramp and the west side will be completed later in the year. Work is expected to be completed this fall.

Earlier today, the city also announced there are 39 different Paving for Progress projects for the 2021 construction season. You can see the list and some specific details HERE. Keep up to date with other road construction projects in the city HERE.
