Legal Sports Betting One Step Closer to Happening in Iowa
The Iowa Senate has passed a bill that could legalize sports betting in Iowa. The bill now moves on to the Iowa House, where it could be fast tracked into a vote.
There are several interesting things happening here. First is the bipartisanship nature of the bill. Both Republican and Democrat members are in support of it, while there are also members of both parties that are opposed to it.
Second is that there has been no public debate over the bill, which usually points to a lame duck or dead issue, but in this case may more likely be the opposite case.
If enough members of Iowa's congress don't see a problem with it, the issue of sports betting in the state may be a non-issue.
The Gazette reports that "a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for states to legalize sports betting if they choose....supporters of the proposal to legalize sports betting have argued the activity already is taking place illegally, and the state would be better off regulating and taxing it."
KRNA listeners are avid sports fans who might enjoy placing a local wager on professional games. It's just a bet, but this could be a good thing for Iowa's economy.
