Former Northern Iowa Video Coordinator Named NBA Head Coach
As he prepares to coach in the NBA Finals, and is readying to take the helm of another basketball team, it's fair to wonder if coach Sean Sweeney ever, for a moment, envisioned this path when he worked at Northern Iowa.
Last week, it was revealed that San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney would be named head coach of the Orlando Magic whenever the Spurs' season comes to a close. Turns out, the Magic will need to wait a little while longer to introduce their man as the Spurs are set to take on the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, which begin on Wednesday, June 3rd.

Sean Sweeney's Coaching Journey Includes Time Spent in Northern Iowa:
In lieu of congratulations being thrown at Sweeney, both for his accomplishments with the Spurs and his ascension to head coach of the Magic, the University of Northern Iowa Panthers Men's Basketball team took to Twitter to inform folks that Sweeney himself was once a Panther. Per Sweeney's own LinkedIn account, he worked for UNI as a video coordinator during the 2010 - 2011 season.
A video coordinator is a common entry level position in any sport for those who harbor coaching aspirations. It's a gopher role, to a degree, which requires long hours spent editing film for coaches and players to watch in order to plan for current and future opponents.
Sweeney's job as one of the video coordinators for Northern Iowa led him to the same role with the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets in the subsequent years. Since 2013, he has been an assistant coach for the Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks to name a few. In June 2025, Sweeney joined Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson as one of San Antonio's assistant coaches.
Only 41-years-old, Sweeney is a native of Saint Paul, MN, and attended the University of Green Bay and the University of St. Thomas, playing college basketball for both. After going undrafted in the 2006 NBA Draft, Sweeney swiftly went into coaching.
Following a win or loss in the NBA Finals, Sweeney will take over a Magic team that has been a consistent playoff contender over the last few years, but has arguably underachieved, having advancing past the first round in three straight years under former head coach Jamahl Mosley (now the coach of the New Orleans Pelicans). Having ever been a head coach in the past, the expectations will be high, but with a team that's already enjoyed some success, and with a reliable coaching acumen, Sweeney seems poised to succeed.
