Iowa Train Hits Truck, Killing Two Teens and Injuring Two Others
Authorities in south-central Iowa are investigating an accident between a train and a pickup Thursday afternoon that left two teenagers dead and two others with life-threatening injuries.
It Happened Late In the Afternoon on Thursday
According to KCCI, authorities and emergency crews were called to the scene of a collision between a Burlington Northern Sante Fe train and a Chevy Silverado pickup Thursday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. The accident happened near 160th Avenue and Kansas Street in rural Clarke County. The intersection is slightly north of Highway 34.
Authorities Say Two Were Killed Instantly
Sergeant Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol said there were four teenagers in the Silverado pickup. KWWL reports that two passengers were killed instantly, while the driver and another passenger suffered life-threatening injuries. KCCI says they were taken from the scene by air ambulance. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the four teens had been driving on a dirt road prior to the accident.
Railroad Says Intersection Was Equipped With Variety of Warning Devices
The Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad says none of their employees were injured in the incident. They confirmed to KCCI that the crossing where the collision occurred was equipped with flashing lights, bells, and gate arms.
None of the names of those involved have been released. The Clarke County Sheriff's Department and Iowa State Patrol continue to investigate.
