It was a sad Tuesday for members of the Iowa football family. Former Hawkeye running back Derrick Mitchell Jr. passed away after being involved in an automobile accident last Friday.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz began his Tuesday press conference with the tough news, saying that "condolences are with his entire family", and that it was a sad day for Iowa football. The 24-year-old Mitchell Jr. played for Iowa from 2013 to 2016 before leaving as a graduate transfer to Incarnate Word. He moved from running back to wide receiver in the spring of 2015. He caught 4 passes for 41 yards in Iowa's loss to Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

According to police in St. Louis, they responded to a car accident at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Mitchell Jr. was transported to a hospital in critical condition. This fall, Mitchell Jr. had begun his first season as offensive coordinator at Career Academy, a high school in the St. Louis area.

In March, former Iowa running back Damon Bullock died in a car accident near his home in Texas.
