Police in Cedar Falls say that two people were shot just before bar close early Tuesday morning. The incident happened at around 1:45 a.m., less than two hours after ringing in the New Year.

Witnesses say that one person fired multiple shots from a handgun into a crowd of people near the 2200 block of College Street. Two people were struck by bullets. They were taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries. The shooting happened near a stip of bars just blocks away from the University of Northern Iowa campus. Students there are still on winter break.

Cedar Falls police would not comment on what might have led to the shooting. Officials say the injuries of those hit do not appear to be life-threatening. An officer near the scene at the time of the incident did chase the suspect on foot. He lost the suspect near the College Hil neighborhood.
