It comes as no surprise, but this is turning into a real bummer of a summer as another great annual activity gets the boot until 2021.

The Zach Johnson Foundation's Annual Golf tournament scheduled for July 27 has now been officially canceled, due to the continuing coronavirus crisis.

Earlier plans to hold the event without fans attending were scrapped by the Foundation and announced on Wednesday, according to CBS2/Fox 28 Iowa's News Now.

"In light of the increasing concern over the rise in cases in Linn County and other parts of Iowa and the U.S., we couldn’t in good conscience host the event and put people at risk,"  - Pat Cobb, Chairman, Zach Johnson Foundation

The statement was posted on the foundation's website and is not a big surprise. As cases of Covid-19 continue to rise in the United States, more and more events and group gatherings are being scrutinized or scrapped altogether.

The annual charity golf tourney has been a standout summer event in Cedar Rapids for years and usually dovetails with another popular regional outing, the John Deere Golf Classic in Silas, IL in mid-to-late July. That event was scrapped several weeks ago.

The Zach Johnson Foundation is still supporting the Kids on Course program which provides virtual mentoring and virtual summer camps. Working along with HACAP, foundation staff members have delivered 2,857 food boxes to underprivileged kids in Eastern Iowa.
