Will The Iowa Men Win Another Game In 2019?
With just over one minute left in yesterday's Iowa game at Nebraska, I sat on my couch and had a few positive thoughts about Iowa basketball roll through my mind. They had righted the ship. They were going into the Big 10 Tournament with a win and an 11-9 finish in arguably the toughest conference in college basketball. A lot can change in less than one minute.
Actually a lot can happen in 38 seconds. Nebraska rolled off 16 points in 38 seconds to send the game into overtime where they would eventually win 93-91. The lead was gone in 38 seconds. There were other factors that led to Iowa's demise. 11 missed free throws. More break downs on the defensive side of the ball. Ten turnovers in the second half after just 2 in the first. It was another Iowa collapse.
There were some positive signs on Sunday too. Iowa's Luka Garza emerged from a bit of a slump with 25 points. Tyler Cook rebounded from a scoreless effort at Wisconsin and had 9 points and 9 rebounds. But he fouled out with two minutes to play. Jordan Bohannon hit more late game threes that should have been the winning difference.
Up next for Iowa is the Big 10 Tournament in Chicago. Iowa has a bye and will play the winner of the Illinois/Northwestern game. Iowa swept the Wildcats and blew out Illinois in their only meeting of the year. But that was weeks ago. This isn't the same Iowa team. Some have said that Iowa's NCAA chances are at risk. I say with a 21-10 record and a .500 conference record they should be fine. But two or three wins in Chicago probably wouldn't hurt. But does this Iowa team have any wins left?
