Why One Iowa Congressman Is Against A Ban On Dog And Cat Meat

A bill is making its way through Congress that would ban dogs and cats being slaughtered for meat in the United States. The bill is co-sponsored by two Iowa representatives, David Young, a Republican from Van Meter, and Dave Loebsack, a Democrat from Iowa City. Even Senator Chuck Grassley spoke out in favor of the bill yesterday. But one Iowa representative is against such a bill. Steve King.

Now before you start railing on King, who has been known to say some fairly controversial things in the past, his reasoning for not supporting such a bill isn't because he wants us to be able to eat dogs and cats. At least I don't think it is. King, along with a few other members of Congress, came out against the ban because they don't feel that it is an issue in the United States. They feel the bill is a waste of time. Imagine that. Congress wasting our time on something.

Now while I agree that there are many other important issues I'd like Congress to work on, a bill that has bipartisan support is a rare thing these days. And before you say that atrocities like dog and cat consumption can't happen in the U.S., a Pennslyvania man was caught recently breeding dogs for their meat. A similar situation happened in Hawaii. Yes, I get it. There aren't widespread reports of this happening. But passing a bill like this will discourage anyone from thinking about it. The midterm elections are coming up in November, and I hear pet lovers vote their conscious.
