Today could be seen as an historic day in Washington. And it's high time for this to happen.

On Friday the United States House of Representatives passed legislation that would effectively decriminalize marijuana on a federal level.

The vote was 228-164, providing a glimpse of what may be possible in 2021 with a more progressive congress taking some giant steps to make progress on legalizing weed altogether.

Today's bill is more than just a symbolic step forward, but not much. It's still an important step to take. Symbolic, because conservatives in the Senate will likely stall any progress as long as they hold a majority.

But in reality you just cannot deny the fact that with more and more states legalizing weed every year, the country's attitude toward the sweet leaf is rapidly shifting more to a "live and let live" point of view. After all, it's not the "evil weed" we were all led to believe for decades. Many people see grass as less dangerous than alcohol.

According to FOX News, Arizona, Montana, New Jersey and South Dakota all voted to legalize marijuana in election referendums, bringing the total to 15 states where grass possession and use will be as legal as licking postage stamps. It's really long overdue, but progress is being made.

The bill would remove cannabis from the Federal Controlled Substances Act, and would expunge previous marijuana convictions. Another important step is to resentence those imprisoned with minor pot convictions.

Where will it end up? Who knows. But it sure was cool to hear the bill passed with overwhelming support 228-164.
