Charges have officially been filed in the strange case of a stranger who walked right past security at an Iowa hospital and feed a complete stranger's baby.

KCCI is reporting that on Monday police in Des Moines charged 36-year-old Adam Wedig with two counts of criminal trespassing. Wedig is the man seen on surveillance video walking into MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines and entering the NICU.

After entering the NICU, Wedig bottle-fed a baby that was not his. Police say that a motive in the case is still not clear, but that Wedig had no intentions of harming the newborn.

After the story first broke, many wondered what steps MercyOne Hospital would take to step up security efforts. KCCI reports that the hospital has responded and says the following security measures are being followed.

  • Re-education of NICU and security colleagues on all safety and security protocols.
  • Increasing ID checks and visitor log sign-in at entrances to the hospital.
  • Enhanced security protocols and increased staffing at NICU and baby nurseries.

MercyOne cooperated fully with Des Moines police during their investigation and says that they continue to take the security of their patients and families seriously.
