UnityPoint Health has announced a significant workforce change tied to its Information Technology and Revenue Cycle operations. These layoffs will affect multiple employees and facilities across Iowa. According to the company’s official release, the organization will eliminate 207 Information Technology positions as part of a broader transition to third-party vendors.

The decisions for layoffs are part of a long-term effort to strengthen the company's financial sustainability, citing ongoing pressures across the healthcare industry. These include labor costs, increased expenses for supplies and pharmaceuticals, and reduced reimbursement rates from insurers. UnityPoint also pointed to growing demand for more complex patient care services as another factor influencing the restructuring.

Like many health systems across the country, we are navigating a period of sustained financial pressure that requires us to make difficult but necessary decisions. Our focus is to ensure we remain strong for the future—so we can continue delivering expert, high-quality care and expand local access for the patients and communities who depend on us. These decisions are incredibly difficult because they affect valued members of our team who have contributed meaningfully to our mission. We are committed to supporting our team members while positioning our organization to continue serving our communities for years to come.”

-Scott Kizer, President and Chief Executive Officer of UnityPoint Health

While UnityPoint confirmed 207 IT roles will be eliminated company-wide, the Iowa WARN system provides a more detailed look at how those jobs were distributed across the state. The WARN database, which tracks required layoff notifications in Iowa, lists slightly different totals for IT positions, reflecting how job classifications and reporting timelines can vary between state filings and internal company counts. Iowa's WARN system shows approximately 189 IT workers affected across multiple locations. However, more layoffs are to be expected in the Revenue Cycle department as this future process with 3rd party organizers is finalized.

The largest concentrations of impacted employees are in Hiawatha and Des Moines, with additional smaller numbers reported across Iowa. Workers were notified in advance of the changes, and layoffs are scheduled to take effect later in the year, with the WARN date listed as July 24th.

Roles affected by the layoffs were selected to minimize disruption to direct patient care. The organization has emphasized that any financial savings from the restructuring will be reinvested into patient care, employee support, and community health services. The company has assured that impacted employees will be provided with severance, benefits continuation, and career transition support.
