Political commercials are everywhere (cough). Elections get longer and longer with more and more candidates vying for our attention and votes. It can wear you out, but it also stresses the importance of getting out the vote.

Iowans know more than almost anyone the importance of this civic responsibility. Two local Eastern Iowa schools seem to be having success with it, as Secretary of State Paul Pate recently said that these two schools now boast voter registration numbers at 90 percent of their eligible students.

Prairie High School and Isaac Newton Christian Academy now qualify for the Carrie Chapman Catt Award. She was an Iowa woman who was a leader of the women’s suffrage movement. In short, she helped give women the right to vote.

A law was passed in Iowa to give students eligibility to register to vote at age 17,  if they will be 18 by election day, making it much easier for young voters to have their voice.

Mason City's Newman Catholic High School and Rivermont Collegiate in Bettendorf, also passed the threshold, according to the secretary of state.

Secretary Pate's efforts along with two nonprofit organizations have helped register over 50 percent of eligible students across the state.
