Today is a really good day to quit smoking.

On the third Thursday of every November, the American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout event. That day is today, so put the cigarettes down!

Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. An estimated 475,000 deaths happen every year because of smoking. Today is a day to look at those numbers and put together a plan to quit. That way, you can live a long, healthy life.

I smoked for over 20 years. I won't lie to you, I LOVED smoking cigarettes. I was hooked and I had a terrible addiction. It took me over 50 times to finally give up the smokes. I tried everything...in the end, I just quit. Cold turkey.

It's been over three years now and it's still not easy. I still think about smoking, but I know I can't have just one. If I do, I'll be back to a pack-a-day habit and I never want that again. It was hard enough to quit and I NEVER want to go through that again.

If you smoke, take this day to think about quitting. That's what the Great American Smokeout is all about. The American Cancer Society uses this day to encourage others to quit smoking and provide support with the tools they need.

Best of luck, it won't be easy...but you'll be happy you did it.
