Tonight is going to be one of those nights that school administrators, storm spotters, and law enforcement will all be keeping an eye on the weather. Most high schools in the state of Iowa have their first football games of the season tonight and, in many places, those games could take a long time to get played.

The National Weather Service is warning of the possibilities of severe storms between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. tonight. The biggest risks are for large hail and damaging winds, but a tornado is also possible.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association requires play be halted by any weather that involves lightning and/or thunder:

When lightning is seen or thunder is heard outdoor activity should be stopped and everyone should be directed to shelter. Do not resume activities until approximately 30 minutes have passed since the last thunder was heard.

I was at a game last year at Cedar Rapids Xavier that had a lengthy delay due to just that. It's certainly no fun, but safety is always paramount. Hopefully, it won't come to that tonight. Stay safe and best of luck to your team!
