If you drive along 6th Avenue in Marion on a frequent basis it's hard not to be impressed with the building that will be the new Marion Public Library. It is also hard to remember when exactly the project started as it has seemingly taken forever to get to the point where we are now. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the city of Marion is expected to gain access to the building next month, and they're already targeting an opening weekend.

The brand new two-story building is located on 6th Avenue right across from the current location of the Marion Library. The Gazette points out that since that building was opened in 1996, the city of Marion has doubled in size. It is fitting that the new library building will be twice as big as the old location. As of now, April 15t is the date on which the city is hoping to gain access to the new building.

The Gazette reports that currently, the second floor of the new library is nearly move-in ready, just needing a bit of painting and finishing touches. The first floor is another story. It is still an active construction zone with flooring and ceiling tiles being placed. A demonstration kitchen will be featured on the first floor. Cabinets in that area still need to be installed and appliances are still on order.

Officials say that other features in the $18 million library will include a recording studio, a 'green screen' room, and gaming areas. The Gazette reports that there will also be a second-floor outdoor terrace with an indoor/outdoor fireplace. So when will this amazing facility open up to the public? City officials are aiming for the Fourth of July weekend, however, library staff says that it could be the following week before things are fully ready to go.
