On the surface, the question "what is Soldier Field" seems like a pretty simple one with an easy answer. For several, it is the longtime home of the Chicago Bears. The Chicago Fire plays there too. There are also many concerts and other entertainment events held in the venue.

Soldier Field Is A Memorial

Soldier Field is a memorial to the men and women of the United States who served our country. On an outside wall of the stadium reads "Dedicated to the Men and Women of the Armed Services."

According to soldierfield.net,

 "1919 - Plans for the stadium began in 1919 when Holibird and Roche won an architectural competition to build the stadium as a memorial to American soldiers who died in wars."

 

"November 11, 1925 – The Municipal Grant Park Stadium is officially renamed Soldier Field at the urging of Chicago’s Gold Star Mothers."

 

"November 27, 1926 – Soldier Field was officially dedicated in front of a crowd of 110,000 during the Army v. Navy game. The game ended in a 21-21 tie."

Special Veterans Day Event

This year, there will be a very special event held at Soldier Field on Veterans Day.

  • Thursday, November 11th.
  • Soldier Field Gate 0 (1410 S. Special Olympics Drive).
  • Doors open at 10 am.
  • The ceremony begins at 11 am.
  • Free parking at Waldron Deck.
  • The dress code is Business Attire or Service Dress Uniform.
  • On Veterans Day Chicago will honor those who served in the armed services during war and peace.
