Some area campgrounds will be open as early as this weekend, according to the Linn County Parks system and Iowa News Now.

It comes as welcome news to some camping enthusiasts that Squaw Creek Park and Morgan Creek Campgrounds will reopen this Friday August 21 at 7:00 a.m.

The Derecho took its toll on virtually every block of every neighborhood in Cedar Rapids. Power is still out in some areas, with hopes of being close to fully restored coming soon.

While the Linn County Conservation offers a reminder that campsites are first come-first served, the Park's reservation system can show you what dates, if any, are available. A check of a few sites showed results that looks like they're pretty book up already.

For those who enjoy the camping experience, it may be the perfect retreat. Any night spent gazing up at the Milky Way with a Smore's in hand is a good night. Besides, you know...free firewood.

Also announced this week is the news that local movie theaters are soon to be opening as early as this Friday August 21 in both the Cedar Rapids and Coralville areas. And the Live at Five local music series continues at the US Cell Center this weekend.

It's obvious people are aching to get out and socialize. More and more events are taking place with businesses doing their best to limit crowds, to sanitize and keep safe distances.

Only time will tell if we pass or fail the contagious Covid-19 challenge.
