Pair Rides Antique Bikes From Michigan to Key West

A father-daughter duo road their high-wheel bikes a longer distance in a month than I have my entire life.

Randy and Amy Oleynik started their cross-country October 9th in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, at the northeastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. On Saturday, November 14th, they concluded the 2,000-mile ride in Key West at the "Southernmost Point" marker.

“We rode from San Francisco to Boston in 2016, and after that we decided we should do the north-to-south to complete basically the ‘holy grail’ of high-wheel biking across the country," Randy Oleynik, 61, told WNEM.

They averaged about 60 miles a day on the 132-year-old high wheels, accompanied by a support van driven by Randy's wife/Amy's mother.

“When people see us going by, number one they smile, so it’s a great reaction,” Randy said. “They wave, they yell, they beep their horns, they swerve, they’ll stop their cars in the middle of the road.”

“What we want this ride to tell people is, number one, get outside,” Amy said. “Get out there — you’re definitely never too old to learn how to ride a bicycle.”
