
One Person Drowns In Cedar Rapids Pond
A 21-year-old has died after drowning in a Cedar Rapids pond on Sunday evening. According to a press release from the city of Cedar Rapids, at approximately 5:48 p.m. Cedar Rapids fire and police officials responded to the emergency call at 100 J Avenue NE near Mohawk Park.
Upon arriving, police discovered that three individuals had been out on the ice of the pond and fell into the water. A 14-year-old male and a 17-year-old male were both able to pull themselves out of the water. The 21-year-old was not, and remained submerged in the pond. The two were unable to rescue him. They went to shore and called 9-1-1.
Cedar Rapids firefighters, with the assistance of the Johnson County Dive Team, conducted an ice rescue and were able to locate the victim at around 7:40 p.m. The victim was submerged for nearly 2 hours and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two victims were transported to St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids for further treatment.
