The tradition continues. An Iowa Hawkeye is bound for the NFL, as a first-round pick. This time, it's a young man from right here in the corridor. Former Mt. Vernon Mustang Tristan Wirfs.

Wirfs, first-team All-Big Ten, and the conference Offensive Lineman of the Year during his junior and final season at Iowa is headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wirfs was taken with the 13th overall pick and will have the job of protecting future Hall-of-Famer Tom Brady, who recently signed with Tampa Bay.

It was the perfect conclusion to what had already been a special day for him and his mom in his hometown of Mt. Vernon. There was no red carpet for Wirfs to walk tonight with the NFL draft being virtual, but that didn't stop Tristan from having his mom walk it...

Wirfs becomes the sixth Iowa Hawkeye to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft in the last 10 years. He's also one of three that played their Iowa careers on the offensive line.

Congratulations, Tristan. Good luck! And best of luck to all those guys who will go against you and try to get to ball carriers and quarterbacks in the NFL.
