Man Arrested After His Neighbor’s Dog Steals Bag of Meth and Takes It Home

A dog showing up at home with a bag of meth set off a chain of events that led to the arrest of a man who intended to distribute it.

According to Timothy Bernard Reese, 44, of Tift County, Georgia, who plead guilty in court, a neighbor of his called police on him after finding his meth.

The neighbor called the police because his dog came home on December 13th, 2019 with a brown satchel, and inside was a large quantity of drugs.

Police said the contents of the bag tested positive for 154.78 grams of methamphetamine, and lottery tickets were also found in the bag.

Officers took the information from the lottery tickets and pinpointed their purchased date, time, and location. From there, they were able to use surveillance footage to positively identify Reese as the one purchasing them at a Susie Q's. It was within three days that officers were able to serve a warrant for his arrest.

A day after his arrest, a woman had filed a report with the Cairo Police Department, saying that Reese came into her hotel room and punched her in the face, demanding to know where his meth was. Her eye socket was fractured in the assault.

“It’s not every day that a family pet helps nab a drug trafficker. I want to commend the concerned Thomas County citizen and his devoted dog for helping to bring this methamphetamine dealer to justice,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. “The Thomas County-Thomasville Narcotics/Vice unit continues to do an outstanding job protecting the citizens of their community and curbing the flow of deadly narcotics into south Georgia.”

Reese has prior convictions for burglary as well as possession of firearm by a convicted felon. He's facing a maximum of 20 years of imprisonment for this charge, which will be followed by three years of supervised release and a maximum fine of $1,000,000.

“We are all in this fight against drugs together. We welcome help from anybody including family pets,” said Lieutenant Commander Louis Schofill, Thomas County-Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division.
