Mysterious Iowa Murder the Subject of New Movie
It's been nearly a decade since an Iowa woman went missing. Now, audiences will be revisiting the case when the movie about the tragic death of Cari Lea Farver premieres this month.
November 13th, 2012 was the last day that the 37 year old Macedonia native was seen alive. Farver's boyfriend left his home in Omaha early that morning to go to work and that was the last time he ever saw her, according to Iowa Cold Cases.
After the couple went their separate ways that morning, the boyfriend, Dave Kroupa received a strange text message from the single mom he was seeing, saying they should move in together.
The couple had not known each other long and they both agreed to keep it casual, so it seemed like an odd request. Kroupa said no to this proposal and got an out of character reply back.
"Fine. I hate you. I'm dating someone else. I don't want to see you anymore. Go away," according to ABC News.
That led to several years of harassment from "Cari." All of these volatile messages were directed at Kroupa, people in Kroupa's life, and another woman he was seeing casually at the time, Shanna Golyar.
Golyar would receive vicious messages from Cari's number, threatening her and people she loved.
Farver was reported missing on November 16th, just three days after that initial message, according to reports.
Two months later, the Iowa native's vehicle showed up in her boyfriend's apartment complex.
Cari's mother started to receive strange messages for the next few years from her daughter's number as well. By 2016, Kroupa received 12,000 aggressive messages from Farver.
Turns out the messages everyone received weren't from Cari, but Golyar!
Four years after Farver went missing, on August 15th, 2017 Shanna Golyar was sentenced to life for first-degree murder. SHANNA had been messaging everyone under the guise of being Cari for years!
They met each other in passing once in the hallway of the boyfriend's apartment building. Nearly a decade later and Cari's body has never been found.
Most of the time, I feel a bit conflicted about these sort of portrayals of real crimes. The production team from Lifetime Television donated made a donation to the Cari Farver Memorial Scholarship at Iowa Western Community College.
