A 61-year-old man is thankful for his home cooking after he's alive to tell the tale of a home intrusion and attack that happened last Friday.

The Seattle Police Department said the break-in took place around 2:40am, when a 61-year-old man and his 15-year-old daughter were sleeping inside the home.

Police said when the intruder got inside the house, he immediately armed himself with a knife from the knife block in the kitchen. The homeowner, seeing the intruder, grabbed a frying pan to use in self-defense.

The suspect began chasing the homeowner, and the two ended up in the front yard of the home where the suspect stabbed the homeowner in the leg, police said. The man defended himself with the frying pan, and the suspect sustained serious injuries as the men fought outside.

When it was all said and done, the suspect had a couple stab wounds of his own.

“He was in a life-or-death circumstance, and he ended up surviving,” Seattle police Detective Eric Munoz said. “Obviously, he sustained a serious injury, but he fought for his life and survived.”

The teen girl texted 911 during the intrusion to try and stay hidden, and police say she was found uninjured after the incident.

Firefighters arrived and treated the homeowner's stab wounds before he was transported to the hospital.

The home intruder was also treated and arrived at the hospital in critical condition. Police have posted an officer or two outside of his treatment areas to be sure he doesn't slip away.

The suspect will be arrested for residential burglary and felony assault once he is discharged from the hospital.

Neighbors were surprised to hear about the home intrusion once word got around.

“There have been ... where people have come home and there’s someone in their house, but I can’t remember a home invasion, per se,” a woman named Kristen told KIRO. “Hopefully, it was just a random event and it doesn’t happen again.”
