Cedar Rapids Kernels Upgrading Their Own Field of Dreams
Another summer of hoopla surrounding the Field of Dreams in Dyersville has come and gone. In the second edition of Major League Baseball held at the beloved movie site on August 13, 2022, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3-2. On to next year!
Except, there won't be a game next year. New Field of Dreams owner Frank Thomas announced shortly thereafter that construction on a massive new revamp would be underway by this time next year, and would prohibit the annual MLB game from taking place. Those massive improvements are getting widely panned by Iowa residents and prospective visitors of the popular site.
Parts of the plan at Field of Dreams don't actually sound so bad and, in fact, some sound similar to the less aggressive upgrades planned at another Iowa stadium that's home to one of the other teams that played there earlier this month when the Quad City River Bandits (Davenport Blue Sox) took on the Cedar Rapids Bunnies (Kernels). Renovations have also been planned this offseason at Veterans' Memorial Stadium.
Some of the renovations can't get off the ground until the season actually ends because, thankfully, the Kernels still have a lot of baseball left to play.
As mentioned in the Facebook post above, the new "Annex" will have benefits for players and fans alike.
- BIGGER videoboard
- new playing surface & new amenities
- Two new batting cages
- Weight room facility
- Video Room
- Small party room or commissary
Speaking about the new video board, Jessica Fergesen of the Kernels said:
A new videoboard will benefit everyone at the ballpark. New state of the art technology and a better clarity in the board will enhance the sponsors images, player stats and fun promotions that take place on the field.
By the time you attend a Kernels baseball game next spring or summer, Veterans' Memorial stadium may look different. But before we get to next season, don't miss out on your chance to be one of three fans to win a free Big Screen TV from First Federal at our last "Big Screen Thursday with the Kernels on September 9. The following night is the final "2 for 1 Friday" at the ballpark where all 16 oz. draft, canned beer, and 20 oz. bottled soda and water are "buy one get one FREE!
