Was ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Worth An 11-year Theater Hiatus?
Here's a list of notable things that happened in 2007:
- The iPhone was launched
- The last Harry Potter novel was written
- 'Jeopardy' had the first three-way tie in show history
- Tiger Woods won his 13th career major
- Drew Carey took over "The Price is Right"
- Eric Stone last attended a movie in a theater.
Wait, what?
Yes. the last time yours truly went to a movie in a theater was eleven years ago.
What movie was it? "Rocky Balboa" (Rocky 6, for all intents and purposes). Typical "Rocky" formula. Warning: spoilers to follow. He's bored, lonely (Adrienne has died and he's estranged from his son). Does he still have another fight in him at nearly 60 years old? He goes for it and that determination brings him back together with his son. The last movie I saw at a theater. Until now.
I saw "Bohemian Rhapsody" over the weekend and like everyone else who saw it, was blown away by the music, the casting, the acting, the production and the stories of the lives of the characters, being Freddie Mercury and the band Queen.
I highly encourage you to see it too and ironically, the same place I saw my last movie is where I broke that hiatus. Collins Road Theaters still does it right. They are now running first-run movies, still at a reasonable price.
Eleven years. I know it's shocking, but I'm not joking. Sci-fi and comic book adaptations don't impress me. Neither do reclining seats. I have that at home. Music and stories do. Some co-workers reminded me some other big hit movies have come out in that eleven years.
Was it worth the wait? Definitely.
Make no mistake, I've SEEN MOVIES in that time, just not at the theater. You have to make it worth my while to leave the house, and "Bohemian Rhapsody" certainly did.
It won't be that long before it happens again.
