Iowa Texting and Driving Law Appears to Be Working
Less than a month into the launch of the new distracted driving laws in Iowa, authorities are reporting some pretty good news.
KCRG says the Iowa State Patrol has only issued 14 texting and driving-related tickets in District 11, which includes Linn and Johnson counties, since July 1. Remember that the law states cops will be most often looking for people using their phone behind the wheel for purposes of “writing, sending or viewing an electronic message”.
Right now, the State Patrol says they are only looking for the most obvious violations of texting and driving, and that it's harder to pick them up on interstates and highways than within city limits, which could contribute to the low rate of tickets issued.
Either way, it's good news (although it still seems like a lot to me) and shows that the new laws may be working.
