After Brock Purdy determined he would not use his COVID year for an additional year of representing Iowa State on the gridiron, the conversation for who will start under center for the Cyclones in 2022 began.

As of now, it appears the starting quarterback position will belong to Iowa-native, Hunter Dekkers. Dekkers was part of the 2020 ISU recruiting class and was a four-star recruit out of Hawarden. He chose to take the Cyclones' scholarship offer over programs like Purdue, Kansas State, and Indiana.

Though the immediate starting position is likely taken, there's another in-state, four-star quarterback who may be coming in hot in 2023.

Today, highly touted gunslinger for the Iowa 5A runner-up Ankeny Hawks JJ Kohl shared his decision to commit to playing for Iowa State via Twitter.

As part of the statement he shared, Kohl thanked his parents and a variety of coaches who helped develop him as a QB. He finished by saying "It is with much gratitude and excitement that I am announcing my commitment to furthering my academic and athletic career at Iowa State University. Go Cyclones!"

In a first-person essay he wrote for the Des Moines Register, Kohl said his decision to become a Cyclone came from the fact that:

They believed in me before anyone else.

In his lone season as the starting quarterback for the Hawks, Kohl completed 143 of 237 passes for 2185 yards and 25 touchdowns to just four interceptions.

The junior chose Iowa State over offers from a multitude of other high-level football programs from across the country including Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Florida State.
