Iowa Only Has One City With Unlocked Home Doors

Remember the good old days.  Back when you could run to the store to get some milk and not have to worry the entire time you were there if you locked the door.

Americans don't trust their neighbors to stay out of their unlocked houses and/or to watch their houses while unlocked.

However, there is one, yes only one, city in Iowa that is still trusting enough to leave the doors unlocked.  That is sadly less than our neighbors in Wisconsin and Illinois.

America's Most Trusting Cities

A recent survey of cities across America uncovered which ones will still leave the house for a family picnic and leave the doors unlocked.

The top 5 cities look like this:

1. Hollister, California (Gotta be honest, wasn't expecting any California cities on the list.)
2. Madison, Mississippi (Definitely not going to find Madison, Wisconsin on this list.)
3. New Braunfels, Texas
4. Owatonna, Minnesota (Would expect more "Midwest Nice" cities on the top of this list.)
5. Barnstable, Massachusets

The Only City In Iowa Where People Feel Safe Enough To Leave Doors Unlocked

Falling just outside the top 5 and the second highest-rated city in the Midwest for being trustworthy is West Des Moines, Iowa.

According to Automatelife.net, West Des Moines is often regarded as a safe place to live.  The overall crime rate in West Des Moines is 132, which is 1.9 times smaller than the U.S. average. In terms of violent crime, the rate is significantly lower at 15, compared to the U.S. average of 22.7, with a reported 176 violent crimes in the last reporting year, equating to a rate of 248.9 per 100,000 people. This is 32.68% below the national average. The property crime rate stands at 36.3, slightly lower than the U.S. average of 35.4. 

So if you want to feel safe enough to leave your doors unlocked but still live in Iowa you either need to move to the middle of nowhere or West Des Moines.
