Iowa Man Pronounced Dead at Cedar Rapids Hospital After Being Shot by Deputy
One person is dead following a shooting involving a sheriff's deputy in eastern Iowa Thursday night.
According to a release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the Tama County Sheriff's Office received multiple calls of shots fired in the 1000 block of Station Street in Chelsea just after 7:25 p.m. Thursday night, October 28.
A number of law enforcement agencies responded to the calls and found a 28-year-old man walking around the area with a handgun. The Iowa Department of Public Safety says a Tama County Deputy fired one shot that hit the man in the upper torso. The shooting victim was taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital Thursday night, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as Dewey D. Wilfong III. The Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny will conduct an autopsy.
The Tama County Sheriff's Deputy who shot Wilfong has been placed on paid administrative leaving pending an independent investigation by the Iowa Department of Public Safety's Division of Criminal Investigation. The deputy's name is not being released at this time.
