IDOT: Driver’s License Stations Will Stay Appointment-Only
The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) has decided to make a change to procedures at the state's driver's license offices a permanent one.
Back in March, the IDOT started making all services at driver's license stations across the state by appointment only in response to COVID-19. They now say the change will be in effect indefinitely.
KWQC reports that in a statement, Iowa's motor vehicle division director Melissa Gillett said,
We’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response from our customers who are able to get in and out in a matter of minutes. In addition, our employees have reported positive changes in their work environment such as more pleasant customer interactions and reduced stress.
I'll admit when I first heard about the change, I was disappointed. I tend to go renew my driver's license on a whim. Probably because I forget to check the expiration and have to get it done at the last minute. I'm good right now... nearly three years 'til renewal. However, when I saw the picture above, I remembered the frustration and uncertainty of each visit to the DOT. Yep, I'm good with making an appointment. However, appointments are usually scheduled out between three and four weeks, so you'll need to plan ahead. You can get more details HERE and make an appointment HERE.
Also, the IDOT announced this morning the REAL ID Gold Star deadline has been extended a full year due to COVID-19. The deadline to get the ID that will allow you to fly or enter a federal building is now October 1, 2021.
