Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and the derecho, lots of eastern Iowa families have found themselves struggling financially this holiday season. If your family is among them, Hy-Vee wants to help by offering you a free holiday meal this week.

According to an official press release, tomorrow, Tuesday, December 15th, Cedar Rapids and Marion Hy-Vee locations will be hosting a drive-thru event where they will donate 3,000 holiday meals to families in need. Each meal kit will feed a family of four and will include a can of corn, a can of green beans, a 5-lb bag of potatoes, a box of stuffing mix, dinner rolls, and a voucher for meat and a pie, which you can pick-up in store.

The drive-thru event will take place at three locations in Cedar Rapids tomorrow:

  • Veterans Memorial Stadium - 950 Rockford Road SW
  • 1st Ave Hy-Vee - 1556 1st Ave NE
  • LADD Library - 3750 Williams Blvd SW (Wiley Blvd. entrance)

Pick-up will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or while supplies last.

Hy-Vee has been very generous these past few months with their food donations. They've held multiple free food distribution events since the August 10th derecho, even donating 1,550 Thanksgiving meals to Eastern Iowa families just last month!

Hy-Vee also recently announced that 47 of their drive-up pharmacy locations will begin offering rapid COVID-19 testing this month. As of today, the tests are available at the Edgewood Road and Mount Vernon Road Hy-Vee locations in Cedar Rapids, and the North Dodge Street location in Iowa City. The tests will NOT be free.
