Iconic Hawkeye Water Tower To Be Torn Down
If you've been to an Iowa Hawkeye football game, you no doubt have seen the tiger hawk logo high atop a water tower outside of Kinnick Stadium. You can see it from inside the stadium. Patients at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital can see from their rooms. Due to ongoing projects at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the tower will have to come down.
The Daily Iowan reports that while the iconic water tower is set to be torn down, a new one will be constructed northwest of the football practice fields. Planning on the new tower began in January, but construction on the project is not expected to be completed until the end of 2025. The cost of the new tower will be around $10 million.
Why is the old water tower coming down? The Daily Iowan reports that it will be moved to make room for the new adult inpatient building at the U of I Hospitals and Clinics. The good news is, that the current water tower and its Iowa Hawkeye logo won't be taken down until the new water tower is completed.
The new water tower will look a bit different than the one currently rising above Kinnick Stadium. The Daily Iowan reports that the new tower will hold more water and have a larger capacity at 55 feet in diameter. So will the new tower also feature the Tiger Hawk logo? Officials say that once the tower is up, they'll discuss what will go on it.
