The Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department announced via their website and Facebook page that four of the city's municipal pools will be ready to open this weekend, Saturday, June 4.

Following months of diligent recruiting efforts by City staff to combat a lifeguard shortage, the City of Cedar Rapids is excited to announce that four municipal pools will open on Saturday, June 4. Cherry Hill Aquatic Center and Bever, Ellis, and Jones Pools will open with schedules for lap swims and open swims posted at http://ow.ly/oN0B50Jn84a. Bender Indoor Pool is also open.

Cherry Hill opened for a pre-season swim over Memorial Day and now it joins the other three in opening full-time for the season. Their announcement goes on to say that due to an ongoing mechanical issue, Noelridge Aquatic Center is expected to remain closed until mid-June or later. They've also elaborated more on that mechanical issue:

The water temperature is currently 65 degrees. The part required to repair the heater is not available until the middle of June at the earliest. If weather temperatures are hot, the pool could open before then, however temperatures must stay warm and cannot drop during the evening hours to get the water to a usable temperature.

The first session of swim lessons at Noelridge has now been moved to Ellis, which will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accommodate the lessons. Open swim on Saturday has now been extended until 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Schedules for open swims are as follows:

Cherry Hill

  • Monday, 1-5 p.m.
  • Saturday 1-6 p.m.

Bever Pool

  • Monday-Sunday 1-5 p.m.
  • Monday-Friday 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. (8 p.m. starting 8/1/22)

Jones Pool

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday 1-5 p.m.
  • Tuesday/Thursday 1:00 - 8:30 p.m. (8 p.m. starting 8/1/22)

Ellis Pool

  • Monday-Friday, Sunday 1-5 p.m
  • Saturday 1-8 p.m.

This is the first time since 2019, prior to the pandemic, that more than 3 of the city's pools have been open at the same time. For more information, visit the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Facebook page.
